The States Of Modern: New Jersey

I was born in New York City, but my family lived in New Jersey at the time. We moved west three years later so I have few memories of the Garden State.  But I have visited a few times and am always struck by what a pretty state New Jersey is.

Beautiful wooded areas, friendly people and the seashore! What more do you need!

My dad was born and raised in Jersey City, the state’s second largest city.  His boyhood was spent playing outside.  He loved to be on the water but his eye was always on the sky.  He eventually became a naval aviator, combining his two passions. Two of his most vivid memories he shared with me… First, going into New York City to see the (original) King Tut exhibit and, soon after he learned to drive, he drove down to see the Hindenburg land in Lyndhurst.  He got stuck along the road and so missed the awful crash but saw the devastation later.  It was surely with some trepidation years later that he moved his family of five children out west.  He loved his native state of New Jersey but saw California as the land of the future.

Here are some New Jersey Facts…
New Jersey: The Garden State
Capitol: Trenton
Admission To Statehood: December 18, 1787
Flag:  The State flag of New Jersey is buff colored. The state coat of arms is emblazoned in the center. The shield has three plows with a horse’s head above it. Two women represent the goddesses of Liberty and Agriculture. A ribbon at the bottom includes the year of independence in 1776 and reads: Liberty and Prosperity. The New Jersey state flag was formally adopted in 1896.
State Bird: Eastern Goldfinch
State Flower: Violet
Largest Cities: Newark, Jersey City, Paterson
