I told you North Dakota was coming! My thought pattern is this… 50 States, 50 Blocks… But a quilt that is set 5 blocks by 10 blocks would be an odd shape so I thought… combine some states! And North and South Dakota, though they have rich, varied and different histories, were an obvious choice to combine into one block with North Dakota on the top (North) andSouth Dakota on the bottom (South!).

The States Of Modern: Michigan
Interesting… Wikipedia points out that Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, to which the name Michigan was originally applied, is often noted to be shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula (often referred to as “the U.P.”) is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The two peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge.
