T-Shirt Scarf

Note to my classes… Red violet/Blue violet 8″ square swap this week.  Last swap of the year!

I saw a scarf made from humble t-shirt knit last summer at a gift shop. With just a bit of applique added, it’s price tag was nearly fifty dollars! Now we all know the material cost a small fraction of that!

Wait! Don’t go! So mine has a snake on it… Yours doesn’t have to have a snake. I’m also providing a Bird And Branch pattern. And you can use any appliqué up to about 7″ wide. Pull out or add an appliqué element for the other end of the scarf to finish it off.
And you don’t even have to add appliqué. How about starting with a printed knit?
Or how about cutting groups of three raw circles off different sizes and coordinating fabrics. Stack em up and add them to the ends of the scarf as dimensional lollipop flowers. FUN!
So I am sharing a pattern and some hints here. My scarf is oblong, about 8″ X 70″ finished and it is cut parallel to the selvedge of a two yard length of cotton knit. This keeps the length stable, but if you have a quarter or half yard of cotton knit left over from another project , you can certainly cut from the width for a scarf about 50″ long.
And any shape goes here. Square … You’ll get two 25″ squares from 3/4 yard. You get the idea.
So I was able to get 5 scarves from my two yard piece. Five gifts from two yards of fabric and scraps! WOW!
The instructional PDF is at the end of this post.

Thanks for stopping by.
