Quilt Hunting in Cambria, Part Four

My husband says I’m in the middle of a quiltfari… A Quilting Safari!

There is this little shop hidden away in the east village on the upper level of a strip mall near our favorite Chinese restaurant.  It’s called A Primitive Perspective Antiques in Cambria, CA.

Now I admit it. I have seen my share of antique quilts. I love their texture, their colors, their fabrics and their patterns. I love everything about them. But seldom am I completely bowled over by a magnificent antique quilt in the shops I usually visit. Then I walked into Primitive Perspectives in Cambria. WOW!
First I saw this wonderful Four-In-Nine…

Love that bold blue sashing. And see the different designs that can be made with this block by simply changing color and/or value? There’s an intersecting chain, and there is a diagonal chain and once in a while it is the bold cross that takes center stage. Value is a fascinating thing!  Sometimes simple is just fantastic!
And on the adjacent wall, a breathtaking multi block Lone Star that nearly had my knees buckling…

Love this sashing too: A three part sash and contrasting cornerstone. WOW! Was I right? Two fabulous antique quilts displayed in the same room!
But wait, there was more! A whole other room filled with treasures.

There, in the next room were a grand Thistle quilt (which I initially I.D.ed as a Pineapple) and a stunning Rose Urn four block quilt. Like I had died and gone to quilt heaven! That Rose Urn deserves a second look…

Look at the urn and the stems and leaves… Probably were originally green and had fugitive dye. Faded now to beige. But still gorgeous! And look closely to see that darker area around the red… What is that? I think that red was reverse appliqued to the urn and the rest of the red is shadowing through. What do you think?
And that Thistle!

Check out that Border motif. Isn’t it perfect? And no fading ( well, OK, not much fading) or fugitive colors here. Those fabrics are as strong as the day this quilt was finished. Yummy! And all of these quilts were hand quilted and most likely hand assembled!
And this Primitive Perspective shop had even more goodies that I’ll be posting in a day or two …
In the meantime, look around this site for LOTS of other dynamite gift ideas and other free patterns.
