Nautical Tumble Block 9: Whales
As promised, here is another block pattern for our Nautical Tumble Quilt. Whether you follow the classics or pop culture, whales certainly have a place in history and in our hearts…
Captain Ahab: From hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Ye damned whale.
Scotty: Admiral, there be whales here!
So I knew whales would have a block in this Nautical Tumble quilt. And I just love these three guys (thanks to Julie and Roxanne’s.). They are perfect on the block.
You see, Julie purchased this set of whales from Roxanne’s Quilt Shop in Carpenteria on our last visit. I had been looking for a whale image for this quilt so I adapted these because they weren’t too cartoonish nor too accurate either! They were just right!

The eye here is just a bit of Freezer Paper ironed in place. I will make eyes of French Knots after the quilt is quilted. This is simple appliqué and the PDF is below near the end of this post.
