Grandma’s Victory

These first few months of 2014 are going to be very exciting as I am going to post FOUR vintage quilt patterns!

These quilts were all made by my husband’s grandmother c. 1960-1980. Each quilt is a masterpiece, entirely hand pieced and hand quilted. That are Treasures and I thank my sister in law for allowing us to be the caretakers of her two quilts. The Grandmothers Flower Garden pictured at the bottom was a gift when my husband I were married. In many ways, that quilt eventually set me on the path I am following today.
The first quilt of Grandma’s that  I am patterning is, as close as I can figure, a variation of the Nelson’s Victory block.

The HMS Victory was Admiral Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) during the Napoleonic Wars. Isn’t she glorious?
But Grandma’s block isn’t exactly Nelson’s Victory. The vintage quilt has two Y-seams in EACH block. Y-seams are slightly easier to piece by hand! The amazing thing is that Y-seam joins two background pieces so you don’t even see it! So I have redrafted the block, eliminating the Y and having it finish as a nice even 8″ block. The original is a 7″ block making the match just a bit messy. It wouldn’t have mattered much since the quilt was surely all template cut, but for rotary cutting an 8″ block eliminates all that.
I’m hoping that 60 years from now a descendent of yours might be remaking your quilt with their modern methods! Perhaps they will cut their patches with a laser or the patchwork will be done with a robotic sewing machine! Wow!

Note added 2015:  I have been lucky enough to have this pattern published by Annie’s.  Grandma’s Victory is now available on their site:

Make A Great Quilt!

PS. Here is a cool variation of this pattern made from swapped 10″ squares of “Ugly” fabric. Eliminate the Solid (Pink) and use the same print in the large squares for the small squares in each block.”Ugly” fabric never looked SO good! Really gives a great effect!

Hi Lynn, I bought some fabric that looks like what you are using in the weekly Christmas blocks. Let me have your address and I’ll mail you a swatch to see if you want some. I bought 3 yards and a 2.25 yard piece. Irene Parker

What a cool quilt, the vintage and the new version. I am going to study it a bit closer to see if I can hit my group’s target range for donation 40 x 60 ish.

    THX so much, Lyn!

Hi Linda, If you make 35 blocks, set 5X7, with just a 2″ border to match your solid, the quilt is about 44″ X 60″ and very fresh looking!

Thank you for the free pattern for Grandmas Victory Quilt. It reminds me of a quilt I saw and fell in love with many years ago (created with hankies).
