Exploring Victorian Gardening with Marta McDowell
The Victorian Lecture Series ( I so enjoyed doing my Victorian Quilts Presntation!) continues at the Fullerton Arboretum on this Sunday, October 20th, 2013 – 2pm to 4pm . And I have half off coupons to share!
Think curves, carpets and color. Who were the garden tastemakers of the 1800s? The period has been called “The Refinement of America.” Why do some garden historians call us “The New Victorians?” This lecture explores the development of a the 19th century American landscaping style from formal to romantic to picturesque.
Marta’s books have explored the gardening interests of two very different writers from the period: Emily Dickinson and Beatrix Potter. Yet their garden styles were similar, even though on opposite sides of the pond.
Marta teaches landscape history and preservation at the New York Botanical Garden and Drew University. She teaches gardening classes for Van Vleck House & Gardens. A popular lecturer on topics ranging from design history to plant combinations, she has been a featured speaker at locations ranging from Wave Hill to the Garden Club of Philadelphia to the Beatrix Potter Society’s Linder Lecture at the Sloane Club in London. With artist Yolanda Fundora, Marta wrote A Garden Alphabetized (for your viewing pleasure) in 2008.
