The States of Modern: North AND South Dakota!

I told you North Dakota was coming!  My thought pattern is this… 50 States, 50 Blocks… But a quilt that is set 5 blocks by 10 blocks would be an odd shape so I thought… combine some states!  And North and South Dakota, though they have rich, varied and different histories, were an obvious choice to combine into one block with North Dakota on the top (North) andSouth Dakota on the bottom (South!).

The Dakotas

North Dakota: The Peace Garden State
Capitol: Bismark
Admission to the Union: November  2, 1889
Bird: Western Meadowlark
Flag:  North Dakota’s dark blue field displays a bald eagle holding an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its claws. In its beak, the eagle carries a ribbon with the words “One nation made up of many states”. The shield on its breast has thirteen stars, representing the original thirteen states. The fan shaped design above the eagle represents the birth of a new nation, the United States. The name “North Dakota” appears on a red scroll below the eagle.
Flower: Wild Prairie Rose
Three Largest Cities: Fargo, Bismark, Grand Forks

I took the design for this North Dakota section of our block partially from the flag (the gold fan section and the eagle wings AND partially from the wonderful Nickname of the state, Peace Garden so the block has triangles in cultivated rows!

South Dakota: The Mount Rushmore State
Capitol:  Pierre
Admission to Statehood: November  2, 1889
Bird: Ring Neck Pheasant
Flag: The South Dakota flag features the state seal surrounded by a golden blazing sun in a field of sky blue. Letters reading “South Dakota, The Mount Rushmore State” — the official state nickname — are arranged in a circle around the sun.
Flower: Pasque Flower
Three Largest Cities: Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen

The South Dakota section of the block is a simplified version of the flag, repeating the triangles of the upper section of the block as zigzags around a simplified State Seal.

Watch for our next combined block in a few weeks… And all of the States of Modern blocks are available in the Archive.

Lyn, where is our next block? Yes, I’m whining and waiting impatiently. 🙂

For some reason, every time I print the North & South Dakota pattern, the bottom portion of Template A falls too low on the page and is partially cut off. Any ideas of how to remedy this?

Is any one else having this problem? Template A bottom should measure 3″ and Template B bottom should measure 5″. Check when you print that it is printing at original size with no scaling…
      Hope this helps… Lyn
