States Of Modern: Nebraska
With the Fourth of July passed, we move into deep summer! Also, we are more than halfway through our States of Modern blocks.
This week we go to Nebraska! For Quilters, Nebraska is all about the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Lincoln. Home to the largest publicly held quilt collection in the world, the IQSC is a place I long to visit. Imagine, a museum filled with exquisite quilts… on a regular basis! Oh yea… I’m going there!
But Nebraska is much more than Quilts. The Cornhusker State was part of the lands explored by the Lewis and Clark expedition. It experienced an influx of population with the California Gold Rush in 1849 and became a US Territory in 1854. But upon investigating Nebraska, you find that history gives way to wide open spaces and historical figures have made way for the Nice people of Nebraska today. I am looking forward to my visit!
Nebraska Facts:
Capital: Lincoln
Admission To Statehood: March 1, 1867
Bird: Western Meadowlark
Flag: A banner for the State of Nebraska shall consist of a reproduction of the great seal of the state, charged on the center in gold and silver on a field of national blue.
Flower: Goldenrod
Largest Cities: Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue
Tree: Eastern Cottonwood
I have a VERY minimalist block to represent Nebraska… Perhaps its based on their flag… Or maybe it represents a single Goldenrod growing under a clear Nebraskan sky… Or even a solitary Eastern Cottonwood whose seed germinated long ago along the banks of the Platte River. I think you get the idea…
