Strippy Place Mats

Don’t you just love working with 2 1/2″ strips? Whether I start with a Bali Pop of luscious Hoffman batiks, leftovers from binding strips or cut strips from my stash, 2 1/2″ strips are the perfect size for SEW many projects!

SEW, as part of our Holiday Prep, wouldn’t be fun to make placemats from 2 1/2″ strips? They are easy to do. I am stealing this idea from my friend Laberta who used some narrower strips:

My version uses all 2 1/2″ strips, but vary it however you like! The Strippy Placemats 2013 PDF is below but here are the basics…

Stitch six strips into a strip set then cut that into 4 equal sections (about 10 1/2″ each).

Center those sections right side up on a cotton batting piece and stitch and flip a few more strips at each end.

Pillowcase (stitch around RST, leaving an opening then turn right side out) a backing piece and top stitch.

Voila! A lovely placemat! Repeat three more times for a quick, scrappy set of placemats and a great gift!

A slightly different arrangement of the strips will make a matching table runner!

Lyn, I cannot thank you enough for posting this now. I want to make a table runner and placemats for my sister for Hanukkah, which starts before Thanksgiving this year. This is perfect!
