Here we go! I am tickled to present our first installment of The Lava Lamps and Love Beads Quilt Pattern! And it is so timely! Fifty years ago this month, the first Lava Lamps were sold!
Here is an AP report Link all about the anniversary of Lava Lamps: Lava Lamps Turn 50 – ABC News Via The AP
In short, these groovy lamps, designed by a Brit, were inspired by an unusual version of a kitchen gadget!
As I have shared here before, our friend, Ray (of Ray’s Finds) has a small collection of Lava Lamps. When he shared a pic of a new acquisition to his collection with us, the seeds of this quilt were planted! I have been fiddling with the border design during the summer break and am quite pleased with the result…
See the love beads cascading around the border and the daisy (still not quite right) medallions. Oh, this is gonna be fun! The pic above has a pic of my actual quilt center superimposed on my updated computer generated design. It has taken a bit to get the math worked out, but that work is now done so we are ready to begin. And Classmembers… Don’t forget, we are having a luminous batik swap in class the week of September 16 (1 1/2 yard of a single prewashed Luminous batik cut into 20 each 10″ squares for swapping.) Now we are starting out slow, with just some cutting til we get back in the swing of being back to class. Next week I will post the Lava Lamp Applique Pattern so be sure to check back!

Florence,
That Lamps Plus site is great – Thanks! Lots of lamps… With fish (toy fish!) and some with glitter and different shapes too. Groovy!
