Spring Medallion Quilt Center Block

Spring Medallion Mock-Up

The Spring Medallion quilt will be an on-going project here at LynBrown.Com for the next few months. The medallion layout was an early form of the quilt and dates back hundreds of years. Generally, there is a central block then the borders begin. Lots and lots of borders! Some medallion quilts were very humble and some were quite grand. Think about the early Chintz quilts with all that glorious Broderie Perse appliqué. Often medallion quilts were a combination of piecing and appliqué. That is where we are headed with the Spring Medallion quilt.
About five weeks ago, I posted the Supply List for this new project. I hope you’ve gathered up all the goodies listed. Since that posting, I have realized you will need a few additional Fat Quarters to really make this quilt glow! These Quarters (2 to 3) are for the appliqué so your flowers can make a garden of color on the Spring Medallion Quilt.  In addition, you’ll need about two yards of paper backed fusible web for the machine appliqué.  Here is the Updated Supply List… Spring Medallion Supply List With Addendum 2 10 12

Spring Medallion Center Applique

This center appliqué block is based on a chair back seen in an antique store, As I always say… Inspiration is all around us! Note that the applique is not featured in my mock up at the top of this post.  I just couldn’t get it to come out the way I wanted in my software.  Some motifs from this center block will be repeated in the later appliqué border. We are going to take this slow, working week by week, so keep your eye on this site every Saturday for all the instructions.  This week the pattern for the center applique is given then next week we’ll discuss the oval band. I’ll mostly be using fusible appliqué but as always, extra points are “scored” if you choose to do hand appliqué. Since the center block is floral you don’t really need to reverse the pattern, but do add seam allowances for hand appliqué. For more info on my fusible appliqué method, check out my PDF for tips and techniques of fusible appliqué and machine stitching…Machine Applique.

Scattered Hearts Swap Quilt

Scattered Hearts Quilt

DON’T FORGET!

For February 2012, the quilting classes of the NOCCCD-SCE-OAP are swapping dark and light red (Okay…red and pink…) 8″ Squares. The swaps will take place in class  Friday February 10 through Wednesday February 15.  Here is the PDF for our Swaps.  After the swap we will reserve some of the squares for our year long Rainbow Triangles quilt and use the rest for the Scattered Hearts quilt.

Scattered Hearts Block

One great thing about this quilt design is the hearts are there if you want to see them. But if you make the quilt in different (non-red) fabrics, the hearts tend to disappear.  If you follow this cutting diagram to cut the pieces for your block you will end up with an extra 4 1/2″ square from each fabric… WOW!  You can use these to make a matching Scattered Hearts doll quilt!

First cut a 3 1/2″ Vertical strip (trim to 6 1/2″ X 3 1/2″.)
Then make a Horizontal 3 1/2″ cut (trim to 3 1/2″ X 3 1/2″).
That leaves the 4 1/2″ square to use in another project!

And it is an easy quilt! Large pieces, just 6 bold 18″ blocks and a simple sashed layout make this a really quick quilt! So if you don’t live in near us in the O.C., dig into your stash, set up a swap with some friends or gather up some fat quarters and make this love-ly quilt for someone you love!

There are lots of free quilt patterns on this site. Download our complete Monthly Miniature Quilts Pattern Pack, Our 2011 Fabric Swap Quilt Pattern Pack or visit our Etsy Pattern site. Quilter’s Alphabet Block 6: Classic Colorful Clamshells

Classic Colorful Clamshells

Amended 2/10/12 with applique shape for clamshell.

I truly did debate about this “C” block.   But when I started to layout these clamshells, they were just too cute to ignore!
Now these shapes give a nod to the quilters who came before us. Those fabulous “needlists” assembled their clamshell quilts all by hand. This block is meant to be fused but those of you working by hand get extra points!  If you do fuse, be sure to window pane your fusing (Trim away interior excess) to reduce bulk and keep a soft feel.

Antique Clamshell Quilt Close-Up

Look at this beautiful antique Clamshell quilt.  Great fabrics, great workmanship!    What an inspiration for our little block. Look at the mix of solids and prints, and just a few darks.  Just great.  Now get started on your own version!

Arroyo Four Square Doll Quilt/Table Runner

I saw this quilt last summer and fell in love! We were at an antique store in Arroyo Grande on the central coast of California. It was a simple quilt but the colors! Indigo blue was paired with white shirting in the 4-Patches then surrounded with that wonderful acid green then the solid Turkey red alternate blocks… I was hypnotized!
20120205-065355.jpgSo I thought I would try my hand at adapting the quilt for our doll quilt series. Here is the result and I’m so happy to share all the instructions with you. You don’t need much fabric. I’m gonna scour around a bit and try to recreate the fabrics of the original but this would be wonderful in any set of fabrics!

Notice how the original quilt maker had a random orientation of the 4-Patches. That really livens things up but if you don’t care for that you can line them all up as in my mock-up. I’m not sure which I like best!

7:30 Garage Binding

20120204-080500.jpg

Lotsa Bindings

Okay… It’s a funny name, 7:30 Garage Binding. But it helps to picture the technique. You have to think about an analog clock (the kind with hands!) when the time is 7:30. The direction the hour hand is pointing at that time is VITAL to finishing off your binding with this method… and it makes it so easy to finish off nicely!

The "Garage" Ready To "Park" The Opposite End Of The Binding

Binding is the final process in making a quilt and one I thoroughly enjoy. There is something reflective about doing that last bit of stitching by hand that is at once soothing and exhilarating!  I think the process outlined on the PDF linked below eliminates much of the frustration. It is still a multi-step process that involves diagonal seams, turning the corners with a nice miter and hiding your beginning and ending point (that’s where the “Garage” comes in!) but there are a few tricks to make it easier and more successful.

Of course, there are other ways to bind your quilt… The pillowcase method (layer batting atop quilt top and backing (RST) then stitch around, leaving an opening to turn.  Turn and top stitch then quilt), The self binding method (Bringing the backing around to the front),  The four sided method (A different strip for each side), just to name a few, but this 7:30 Garage method is easy and finishes off the project neatly.  Remember your binding can add a whole new design element to your quilt (Think stripes or checks or plaids!) or it can disappear (be the same as outer border) or it can even be scrappy!

Don’t have anything set to bind?!? There are lots of free quilt patterns on this site. Download our complete Monthly Miniature Quilts Pattern Pack, Our 2011 Fabric Swap Quilt Pattern Pack or visit our Etsy Pattern site to purchase our previous patterns. For 2012 we are making Rockin’ Roll from a Jelly Roll, a monthly series of Doll Quilts and we will soon start our lovely Spring Medallion Quilt. There is lots to see so browse around!

Quilter’s Alphabet BOW 5. – The “C” Block

Quilter's Alphabet "C" Block

These blocks are really turning out wonderfully! Our class members are having a ball making both the letters and their alternates. I hope you are following along… It’s too early in the year to fall behind!
I’ve not yet decided on the alternate for the C Block. I am torn between two possibilities. So you will have to check back next Thursday to see the final block. I can only say it will continue to be held to the standard of reflecting the fun we quiltmakers are having with this craft in 2012!
I’ve been asked about the set for these blocks. I will try to get a handle on that this week and give you a better idea.  I have something in mind, but it isn’t finalized yet, so watch for it!  In the meantime, here is the A Block and the B Block Pattern in case you missed them.

We are just finishing the Rockin’ Roll Quilt from a Jelly Roll, starting a new  monthly series of Doll Quilts and we will soon start our lovely Spring Medallion Quilt.  And, for 2012, we are starting a new series of swaps (A different color every month) with a free pattern each month and culminating in our Rainbow Triangles quilt!  And don’t forget these Quilter’s Alphabet Blocks!  WoW!  That’s alot of quilting fun!  And there is always more fun at my Etsy site where you can support this site by purchasing a pattern or two….
