The Next Generation of Magic 9-Patch

Hi and Welcome to my blog! This message will pop up the first few times you drop by, then it will stop.

There are a few things you should check out while you are here. If you live in Orange County, CA, check out my Weekly Classes page and come visit one of my free classes offered through North Orange County Community College District.

Just about everything we do in class is posted here, which brings me to the next thing you should check out, the Free Patterns section! There are LOTS of free quilt patterns on this site, so take a look around.

Those patterns won’t be posted forever! Eventually, I’ll offer the patterns for sale, so be sure to also check out my Secure Etsy Shop for lots of great patterns to purchase.

If you are looking for a great Trunk Show and/or Workshop for your Southern California Guild, you’ve come to the right place! My Trunk Show offers a bevy of real quilts and I offer a number of topics. My Workshops teach the tricks, tips and techniques I’ve learned over my last dozen years teaching quilting.

So take a look around and… Make A Great Quilt!

You may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Pretty complicated looking quilt, huh?  What if I told you that to make this quilt, you cut only squares!  Well, read on!

We didn’t have class this week, but I wanted to post my latest pattern.  It’s not often I post something before I give it to my classes, but since I was off this week…(More on the quilt retreat below in yesterday’s post!)

Anyway, many of you have enjoyed the Magic 9-Patch quilt I posted here. That’s the one where you make a large 9-Patch then slice it into quarters, twist around two of the units then stitch it back together.

Twisted 9-Patch block

Here is the Next Generation of that quilt.  Instead of twisting and stitching the units back together, you layer each unit with a same-size whole cloth square, stitch on both sides of the diagonal and cut on the diagonal to create two new units.

You then stitch two of each of those units into a block.  Wow! It is spectacular!

I didn’t mock this up in batiks like the Magic 9, but you can see the activity you get in this block!

Click here for the NextGen pattern page….

The pattern is written to be made with a charm pack and additional 7″ squares.  My students will be seeing my quilt made with small squares.  This just goes to show that the pattern can be worked out to fit just about any size squares!

I will be giving out a B&W copy in class, but click here for the NextGen Quilt.

Be sure to check out www.LynBrownDotCom.Etsy.com for more of my patterns.

And here is our archive of Free Quick To Make Gifts.

And above all… Make A Great Quilt!
